BASF develops extrusion-grade hard TPU

In January 2004, BASF developed a new system of extrusion-grade hard TPU (polyurethane elastomer) grades, which is characterized by maintaining the inherent performance advantages of TPU while overcoming the difficulties of the old hard TPU grades. The disadvantage of extrusion processing is that it can be extruded for a long time, the melt viscosity does not decrease, and no TPU crystals are deposited on the nose and the screw.
BASF believes that the introduction of new materials to pipe manufacturers to provide a new choice of raw materials, because its performance does not decline, and can bring economic benefits to manufacturers, with hard TPU pipe thickness can be reduced, and therefore less materials. In addition, the hard TPU tube has a high burst pressure and a wide range of application, while still maintaining the performance advantages of the soft TPU, including the transparency of the soft TPU.
Various problems that occur in the hard TPU extrusion process limit its use for the preparation of pipe fittings. Hardened TPU grades with a Shore hardness of 50D or more have a narrow processing temperature range and a high recrystallization rate, making it difficult to achieve industrial production.
