The researchers screened the antibody library for antibodies that activate specific receptors on bone marrow stem cells. Natural antibodies are Y-type proteins produced by immune cells. In the 1980s, Lerner and his colleagues at TSRI established a large antibody library for the first time and quickly screened for antibodies that bind a given target. Last year, Lerner's laboratory developed a new technology. Research shows that antibodies may become universal operons for cell functions, allowing researchers to select antibodies that activate a given receptor and change cell functions.

The GCSF receptor is a growth factor receptor on bone marrow stem cells. Xie found antibodies that can activate the GCSF receptor and stimulate cell growth through new screening techniques. Subsequently, the researchers used human bone marrow stem cells cultured in vitro to test this antibody.

In this new study, Jia Xie, a research assistant in Lerner's laboratory, improved the above technology so that the antibody protein produced by the cell is anchored outside the cell membrane, adjacent to its target receptor. On this basis, they conducted faster screening of larger antibody libraries.

"The cells began to proliferate, but at the same time they became elongated and attached to the bottom of the Petri dish," Xie said. After further verification, the researchers found that these cells actually transformed into neural precursor cells.
