Standardization of color management in digital proofing

The core problem of color management is to determine its true color meaning based on a known color information, such as RGB or CMYK values, and to replicate the true color perception on another device by changing the transmitted color value. The effectiveness of color management depends on the accuracy of the device characteristic files used. If the characteristics of the device change, the characteristic files will no longer be accurate, and we will not be able to accurately obtain the colors we want to copy. Therefore, in order to maintain the consistency of product color for a long time in production, it is necessary to standardize the operating environment, which is also the premise of the role of color management technology.

Calibration in the three steps of color management is the basis for implementing a color management system. Calibration is a method to adjust each device (display, scanner, proofer, etc.) to a defined standard state. The purpose is to achieve consistent behavior of the device. It is the device's characteristic file that describes it correctly, so as to carry out correct color management. jobs.

1. The implementation procedure of color management in digital proofing

Second, establish a standardized operating environment

The standardized operation should start from the beginning step by step. Only according to the standardized and standardized operation process, the entire digital proofing process can be supported, and the quality of proofing can be effectively improved to achieve a perfect match with the printed proofs.

1. Printer specifications

The quality of digital proofing is closely related to printing software, printers, ink and paper. Only by determining the standard parameters of various processes, can the equipment reach a good working state, and can it reach the stable process conditions required by color management.

â‘  Experimental conditions

EPSON STYLUS 10600 color inkjet printer, EYE-ONE spectrophotometer;
Founder smooth color management software, software profile maker5.0 that generates ICC files;
EPSON digital proofing paper, EPSON original six-color ink.

â‘¡ Experimental procedure

Establish the basic linearization of the printer, which determines the physical characteristics of the paper and ink, and the smallest possible ink volume to obtain the largest possible color density, which provides the basis and optimized characteristics for the creation of printer paper ICC profile files. Thereby establishing the foundation of color management.

Take Fangzheng Changliu as an example, that is, to directly print the four-color gray scale ruler and test it with a spectrophotometer to directly generate the basic linearity of the printer. Next, the total ink volume is printed, and the total ink volume of the printer is determined from the printed proofs.

After doing the basic linearization, first print out the ECI2002 color scale, and test the L * a * b * of the color block with a spectrophotometer, and then generate an ICC Profile file reflecting the printability through the profile maker software.

2. Specification of printing machine

The color management of digital proofing must first establish a standardized printing state, and the ICC Profile file generated on this basis can accurately reflect the ability of the equipment and printed materials to express colors. The digital proofs produced in this way are really practical in actual production. .

â‘ Prepress process specification

The film output from the imagesetter must meet the quality standards of the output film. Including standardization of process parameters such as exposure amount, linearization period, rinsing time, rinsing temperature, compensation amount, on-site density, and haze of imagesetter. The error of each point of film output is required to be within ± 1%, the maximum density is ≥4.0, and the output dot curve is straight.

In addition to the factors that should be considered in the phototypesetting process, the printing process also includes the adjustment of the exposure amount. The adjustment of the exposure is mainly determined by the gray scale, micro line block and dot performance on the printing control strip (mostly FOGRA). 3% -98% of the outlets appear better.

â‘¡Printing process specification

The printing process specifications mainly include: paper ink performance parameters, ambient temperature and humidity, printing plate blanket selection, printing color sequence, printing speed, printing pressure, solid density.

Use the software Profile maker and eye-one spectrophotometer to test the L * a * b * value of each color block of the ECI2002 color standard printed in the standard state, and generate an ICC profile file reflecting the printability.

3. Analysis of color management applications

Put the previously obtained ICC Profile file reflecting the characteristics of the printing process and the ICC Profile file reflecting the characteristics of the color printer into Fangzheng Changli, and use the color management module (CMM) in Changli to match the files to make the digital proofing simulation final The effect of printing also establishes an ICC Profile file that ultimately reflects the effect.

If we are not satisfied with the effect of the proofing system used, we can choose a paper with a printability between various paper characteristics, and use this paper / ink / printer combination as the target value to establish a characteristic file. Once the printing press has been characterized under this condition and the target value of the paper / ink / printer combination has been established, then the proofing device can be characterized for this target value. When proofing, the color is converted from the printing press characteristic file to the proofing machine characteristic file, and the network expansion caused by different paper is compensated by the curve on the imagesetter or direct plate-making machine, so that using this single printing machine characteristic file can meet Different proofing effects.

However, only one color space conversion is impossible to accurately convert the color. According to the actual situation, the ICC file of the printer needs to be modified and edited many times. The dot increase rate, gray balance data, UCR and GCR parameters of the ICC file can be modified. The total ink volume of the ink can also be adjusted separately for the four color curves of yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. In order to ensure the consistency of the simulation effect, the data is re-measured after a period of time, and a new characteristic file for slight adjustment of the black curve .
