What is color space

Color space, also known as gamut space, represents a range of colors that can be expressed. The color space is divided into a color space related to the device and a color space not related to the device.

Color space related to the device

What we usually call the RGB color model and CMYK color model are all color spaces related to the device. That is, such colors are closely linked to specific equipment. For example, RGB color space is mainly used in scanners, digital cameras, monitors, small printers and other devices. Because of the characteristics of each device, the RGB of each device is different. This is also the reason why the same RGB value produces different colors on different devices.

All RGB and CMYK images are images of the color space related to the device, and the device must be closely connected. As long as different devices are replaced, its color will change.

Device-independent color space

The color space irrelevant to the device refers to a color space artificially created based on theory, such as the Lab color space. That is, such a color exists without the device, and at the same time, any device cannot really show it. It only exists on the theoretical data. As long as it is the same Lab data, it means that it is the same color.

Can the colors of Lab mode be really seen by us?

Although the image mode has the Lab mode, the Lab mode color is the theoretical color space, which cannot be directly displayed by any of our devices, because our devices are RGB devices (such as monitors) or CMYK devices (such as printing presses), Even if our image is in Lab mode, when it is displayed on a specific device, it must be converted to the color space of this device for display. What we see is still the color in the color space of this device.

However, because the Lab color space is theoretically unique, as long as the color of any other color space is the same regardless of whether its value is the same, as long as the value mapped to the LAB is the same, then its color appearance is the same. This creates conditions for us to maintain the same color appearance.

As long as we have a color space description file (ICC file) for a specific device, these ICC files specify the mapping relationship between the color data (RGB or CMYK) of the device and Lab, so that colors with different RGB values are mapped to Lab The value is the same, which ensures that the color appearance is consistent.
