Development History of the World Printing Machinery Industry

The world's printing machinery has made great progress since the 1980s. For more than 20 years, the development of printing machinery has gone through three stages.

The first stage is from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. This stage was the heyday of the development of offset printing technology. There are a large number of offset printing machinery manufacturers all over the world, and they are the dominant players. Famous are: Heidelberg, Manroland, KBA, Miller, Planeta, Polygraph in the former East Germany, Komori, Hamada, Akiyama, Mitsubishi in Japan Heavy Industry, Solna of Sweden, OMSCA of Italy, Nebiolo, Harris of the United States, etc. The maximum printing speed of the sheet-fed offset printing press during this period was 10,000 prints / hour. The pre-adjustment preparation time of a four-color printing machine before printing is generally about 2 hours. The automatic control of the printing machine mainly focuses on automatic paper binding, automatic paper collection, automatic cleaning, automatic detection of ink color, automatic adjustment of ink volume and remote control of registration. During this period, in addition to single-color and two-color machines, almost every sheet-fed offset printing machine manufacturer also has the ability to manufacture four-color machines. Most manufacturers can manufacture paper reversing mechanisms for double-sided printing.

The second stage is from the early 1990s to the late 20th century. In the 1990s, with sheetfed offset printing machines as the symbol, the design and manufacturing level of printing machinery in the world took a big step forward. Germany's Heidelberg, Manroland, KBA and Komori of Japan have all launched their new generation representative models. Compared with the first-stage model, the speed of the new-generation model has been further improved, from 10,000 prints / hour to 15,000 prints / hour, and the pre-adjustment time before printing has been greatly reduced from about 2 hours in the first stage to 15 minutes about. The automation level and production efficiency of the machine are also greatly improved.

Since entering the 21st century, printing machinery has ushered in the third development stage. At present, some models of sheet-fed offset printing presses can reach 17000-18000 printings / hour, but manufacturers do not strive to increase the maximum printing speed of printing presses, but use information technology to further shorten the pre-press preparation time. And the time to replace the work piece pursues higher production efficiency.

In terms of printing machinery automation, technologies such as networking, production integration, digital workflows, and links to management information systems (MIS) have become the focus of development. Heidelberg's CP2000 automatic control system is in addition to the whole machine from paper feeding, paper feeding and guiding, ink feeding, water feeding, plate changing, registration, cleaning, drying, glazing coating, powder spraying and paper collection. In addition to presetting, control and fault diagnosis in the work link, it also has the functions of realizing the network of all production processes of the printing enterprise and online transmission of pre-press image processing data (CIP3 / PPF or CIP4 / JDF data). Manroland's PECOM system, Komori's DoNet system and KBA's OPERA system have similar functions. In the new century, most offset press manufacturers have developed corresponding DI digital presses.

Such as Komori's Lithrone S40D printing machine (B1 format), Ryobi's 3404DI printing machine, KBA's 74Karat model, Heidelberg's SM74DI printing machine (B2 format) and Heidelberg's fifth-generation fast tyrant machine Type --- QMDI46-4Pro type machine (B3 format), etc. In addition, in order to meet people's demand for high-end color prints, 8-color group or even 10-color group multi-color group double-sided printing, additional online post-printing processing functions have become various sheet-fed offset printing machines (including small offset printing machines, DI direct printing) Plate-making machine and large offset printing machine), and the technology is maturing, this type of printing machine has begun to squeeze part of the market that originally belonged to the web printing machine.

According to the statistics of the European Union of Printing and Paper Processing Machinery Manufacturers Associations (EUMAPRINT), due to the impact of the world economic downturn, the sales of printing machinery and equipment in seven countries including Germany, France, the United States, Italy, and Switzerland declined in 2002 compared with 2001. 13.08%. According to the analysis of the economic prosperity index, among the 11 countries including Europe, America, China, Russia, and Japan, only China and Russia are on an upward trend, while the rest are declining. Among them, Germany ’s sales in 2002 were approximately US $ 6.8 billion, which is higher than that of 2001 Year-on-year decline of 12%; U.S. sales were approximately US $ 2.27 billion, a decrease of 16% from 2001; UK sales in 2002 decreased by 24% from 2001 to approximately US $ 1.064 billion; Italy dropped by 8% , About 767 million US dollars.

In 2001, the top five countries in terms of annual output value of printing machinery and equipment are: Germany 7.73 billion US dollars, Japan 3.918 billion US dollars, the United States 2.702 billion US dollars, the United Kingdom 1.4 billion US dollars, Italy 821 million US dollars. The top five countries for printing machinery and equipment exports in 2001 were: Germany 6.325 billion US dollars, Japan 1.578 billion US dollars, the US 1.246 billion US dollars, Italy 1.06 billion US dollars, and the UK 940 million US dollars. The top 6 imports of printing machinery and equipment in 2001 were: US $ 2.2 billion in the US, US $ 1.3 billion in China, US $ 1.228 billion in Germany, US $ 922 million in Italy, US $ 920 million in the United Kingdom, and US $ 798 million in Japan. In 2002, China's printing machinery market flourished, and sales of printing machinery and equipment increased by 13.8%, making it a competing place for the world's printing and equipment manufacturers.

According to the latest statistics of the Printing Branch of the German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers Association (VDMA), the output value of the German printing machinery industry in 2003 was about 7 billion euros, a decrease of 13% compared with 2002. Among them, printing machinery accounts for 4.8 billion euros, paper processing machinery accounts for 1.1 billion euros, and the rest are paper production machinery. At present, German printing technology still leads the world, with a global market share of over 30% and a product export rate of up to 80%, mainly exported to the United States, China and EU member states. In 2003, Germany exported 370 million euros of printing machinery to China, accounting for 9.8% of the total German printing machinery exports. China has become the second largest single export market for German printing machinery. The United States is still the largest importer of German printing machinery, accounting for 1/6 of the total German printing machinery exports.
