At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year, Mcor, the only manufacturer of paper 3D printing technology in the world, launched its first full-color desktop paper material 3D printer, Mcor ARKe. Now, the company has announced that ARKe will be manufactured through Flex, one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers. Like Mcor's previous full-color 3D printing devices, ARKe uses its proprietary Selective Deposition Lamination (SDL) technology. This process works by printing a full color layer on standard office paper, then bonding the layers together and cutting the excess with a tungsten carbide blade. The difference between Arke and the previous system included the replacement of stacks of paper with paper rolls and the integration of the printing system into the cutting area. Unlike Mcor IRIS, which prints first and then feeds the paper into a separate cutting station, ARKe prints and cuts in the same building. Other advantages of ARKe include a 50% increase in DPI resolution and a 150% increase in color resolution. The use of paper rolls also speeds up the 3D printing process, allowing ARKe to use only the materials necessary to complete a given job, rather than wasting the entire A4 office paper for smaller objects. The machine's maximum 3D print size is 240 mm × 205 mm × 125 mm, and the machine's external dimensions are 880 mm × 593 mm × 633 mm. Most importantly, the reason for the system's great attention at CES is the low price. ARKe is the world's first full-color 3D printer with a price below $10,000, priced at $8,995. This is quite low compared to 3D Systems' ProJet 460Plus 3D printer, which costs more than $45,000. It is understood that in fact, at CES 2016, Mcor has received more than 5,000 machine orders, which makes the company urgently need to find a manufacturing partner. Flextronics is the world's second largest electronics contracting manufacturer, second only to Foxconn. According to Fortune magazine, the multi-billion dollar company is looking for a new manufacturing strategy that will undoubtedly give Mcor the help of ARKe manufacturing. It is reported that Flextronics redefined itself as a “sketch to scale solution companyâ€, and the company's current goal is to help customers bring their ideas to market through their in-house designer team and manufacturing capabilities. Since 3D printers usually do not require mass production like other electronic products, Flextronics' new approach is likely to be suitable for ARKe. It is said that Flextronics will work with Mcor to create ARKe on demand using a flexible manufacturing model. Customers can now continue to book ARKe through the Mcor website.
