Speaking after printing

(FINISHING TOUCHES)

According to the survey, 80% of print jobs require post-press processing. In the process of satisfying customers' requests for new and ever-changing products, post-press processing has played an extremely important role. This is especially the case in digital commercial printing today.

At present, on-demand printing has become extremely common in the printing industry. The number of printing jobs has become fewer and fewer, and the work has become more and more, resulting in many benefits, such as reducing waste, diversifying products, and reducing Costs and so on. Undoubtedly, the wide application of on-demand printing technology has greatly expanded the scope of the printing industry.

Recently introduced some solutions for different post-processing technology applications. To meet the needs of the on-demand printing market, Duplo has launched a series of on-line or off-line processing automation equipment, including various collating machines, bookbinding machines, paper cutters, and creasing machines.

Duplo's Binding and Binding System 4000 is capable of printing jobs in any environment and is equipped with a vacuum nozzle delivery system, providing a comprehensive solution for post-press processing and greatly increasing production capacity. The entire system consists of a high-performance collating machine, a powerful and flexible binder, a trimming machine, and an accurate stacking device. It can complete 4,200 booklets or 10,000 pages per hour.

Extension function DBM binding machine expands the function of the printing machine, it can be connected with the printing machine directly, realize the online binding into a book. One of the features of the DBM series is the use of DB-10C buffering technology, which ensures that the machine automatically inserts cover sheets or color pages from two different paper cassettes into the print workflow without affecting the printing speed. 3,600 sets.

The digitization of entering the post-press processing industry must go hand in hand. The Edward Brothers, located in Ann Arbor, MA, entered the book publishing industry in 1993 and began the transition to digitization in 1997. Lee Moore, manager of the company's digital book production center, believes that this change will allow them to start re-examining the company's operations. He said: “We are driving a ship that is highly stressed and can be controlled. The digitized price is so high. Every time you hit a key, each process costs. The technical cost is even higher. Feeling to make money It's hard!"

When the Edwards Brothers decided to enter the on-demand printing market, they only purchased the Muller Martini Amigo wireless binder and flat paper cutters, and other equipments were costly and witty. Moore recalled: "Began to begin, because the price of binding equipment is very high, we have to put together a system by ourselves. Although it is simple, we can also accomplish the task of short-run printing."

The Edward Brothers used the offline method to complete the binding of the finishing press, because at that time, the printing press capacity did not match the speed of the post-press processing equipment. The printing department implemented three shifts, but only one shift after the printing process, generally only Produces 25 to 500 pieces.

Finally, the company decided to change this status, requiring at least some products to be bound online. "We are actively looking for better methods from printing directly to complete packaging, but we do not want post-press processing equipment to be fixed with the printing press because when there are special jobs, this approach cannot meet our requirements." Moore said: "So we cross-trained the operator to operate both the press and the binding equipment."

IBT also uses offline printing and finishing. However, they are different from Edward Brothers. IBT, as a short-run on-demand printing company, emerged ten years ago and is arguably the predecessor of today's digital printing industry. Its offset printing business is limited to a few color covers.

IBT Corporation is engaged in the binding of hardcover books. About half of the stapled products require stamping operations, and the main business also requires cover film. The company includes a variety of printing equipment, such as Ricoh color cover laser printers,
Tektronix Phaser laser printers and Robyn's color presses. In addition, there are various types of binding equipment, such as D&K laminating machines and other saddle stitching and punching machines.

To move to the world but IBT is different is the way they operate internationally. Two years ago, it opened a branch in London and plans to open two more branches in Sydney and Hong Kong within two years to expand its business.

“We are a real printing and distribution global company,” said Bill Crocker, vice president and branch manager. “We don't print in one place, then we ship it to a warehouse and then ship it around the world. The printed matter was sent to our branch offices in the form of documents and printed there, so the time to market was greatly reduced, and there was no other transport cost other than local transportation, and the cost was greatly reduced."

At present, Croke works with other managers to achieve the strategic goal of selling 10% of the company's products to the world. With their expansion plans, this number will continue to increase.

The Toronto-based KIT company was established in 1990 and digitized five years ago. The business volume has reached $15 million. They are mainly engaged in direct mail advertising business. The number of their mailings ranges from 5,000 to several million. The main customers are the telephone companies and the financial sector. Blan Ganner explained: "We take out information in advance from the database, and then carry out individualized personalization according to customer requirements."

In this kind of one-on-one personalization, damage and waste can be a problem, because once something goes wrong, it may mean that the whole process has to be repeated. However, it may not be too worrying for KIT companies because they are dealing with such work offline.

Ganna thinks that “offline processing can reduce the damage to a minimum, and we all know that in the web printing process, if something goes wrong at the beginning, the whole process will be affected. By offline processing, we will lose a few pages. Paper only, this is not a problem for us."

Other new technologies related to post-press processing may be available in the near future. They are characterized by very short readiness, short-run print-on-demand, and touch-screen digital postpress processing lines. There are also hot stamping machines and the like that can directly bronze the hard cover.

As Moore of Edwards Brothers believes, digitization is the future direction of development. He said: "We have been working hard for the digitalization of printing. We know that this is the direction of the future. It is also why we entered this field in 1997. The digital age is coming. We are firmly standing in this direction." On the digital printing, we are full of confidence."
