Punkey mainly infects the Windows Explorer of the POS machine, and hides it, scans the cardholder data, records the keyboard tapping content, and sends the recorded data to the remote server. It checks with the server periodically to see if there are any updates. The Punkey malware also performs keyloggers, which can capture 200 keystrokes at a time and send the recorded content back to the server. Therefore, an attacker can capture important information such as usernames and passwords. All of these functions run continuously, and if the victim restarts the POS, the Punkey will automatically restart. Trustwave pointed out that Punkey's injection and hiding process is more advanced than most of the POS malware seen before. The interaction between Punkey's commands and the server is unprecedented, with arbitrary programs and self-updating, usually not found in POS malware.
