Pearlescent printing is a new type of printing that is more popular in packaging printing and anti-counterfeiting printing in recent years. It mainly uses pearlescent ink. The printing process of pearlescent printing is basically the same as the traditional printing process. The key lies in the preparation of pearlescent ink. It is generally composed of binder, thickener, pearlescent pigment, solvent, and additives. In the preparation of pearlescent ink, the flashing effect of pearlescent pigment is passive light emission, that is, the flashing effect can only be shown under the conditions of light. In order to give full play to this feature of pearlescent pigments, we must pay attention to the following three relationships when selecting pearlescent pigments to formulate inks:

1. The relationship between the size of the pearlescent pigment flake and the glitter effect. The pearlescent pigments used in packaging and printing are all in flake form. Generally, the larger the film diameter, the larger the distance between the flash sources, and the flash effect is dispersed. On the contrary, the smaller the film diameter, the smaller the distance between the flash sources, and the flash effect is concentrated.

2. The relationship between the size of pearlescent pigment flake size and the flash intensity. The larger the diameter of the pearlescent pigment, the more opportunities for multiple reflection and refraction of light on the surface, and the stronger the intensity of the flash; otherwise, the intensity of the flash is weaker.

3. The relationship between the size of pearlescent pigment flake size and the cohesiveness and the suspended sedimentation in the binder. Generally, the smaller the diameter of the pearlescent pigment, the easier it is to agglomerate, and the smaller the aspect ratio of the particles, so that it is also easy to cause sedimentation in the binder, otherwise it will easily be suspended.

In order to make the pigment evenly dispersed in the binder, it is necessary to select the pearlescent pigments with appropriate flake diameter and aspect ratio according to the density of the binder on the basis of mastering the three major relationships. In the preparation of ink, the thickening agent can also be added to prevent the settling of the pearlescent pigment; or the pearlescent pigment can be wetted before being dispersed in the binder, so as to avoid the disadvantages of particle aggregation and settling.

The preparation method of pearlescent ink is as follows: â‘ Generally, add 10 ~ 20g of pearlescent pigment per 100g of ink; â‘¡After the pearlescent pigment is directly mixed with the binder at a 1: 1 ratio, the ink fluidity can meet the printing requirements; â‘¢Color Pearlescent ink can also add some trace organic pigments to reduce costs. Generally, white pearlescent pigments are combined with other pigments. For example, adding 1% carbon black to white pearlescent pigments can obtain the ancient silver effect.

Generally speaking, pearlescent color preparation should be dominated by light colors, because too much dark pigment is added when dark colors are mixed, which will cover part of the pearlescent luster. In addition, color pearlescent ink series products cannot be mixed and used. It is different from general-purpose inks. Two or more inks can be mixed to form another color. When two or more pearlescent inks are mixed, complementary colors will appear between them. The phenomenon, on the contrary, will reduce the pearlescent effect.

Pearlescent ink printing is mainly used for packaging printing of commodities, such as paper packaging soap packaging paper, cigarette cases, cigarette holders, greeting cards, wallpaper, food packaging paper, etc .; film printing: PET, PE, OPP, PS, etc. In the printing process, pearlescent printing is almost suitable for all kinds of printing, but due to different printing processes, their mechanical properties, technical indicators and operations are different, so the ratio of pearlescent ink is also different. In screen printing, the general ratio of pearlescent inks is: 10% to 45% of binders, 0.5% to 1.5% of thickeners, 5% to 30% of pearlescent pigments, 15% to 35% of solvents, and appropriate amounts of additives.
