Primary and secondary biosafety laboratory protection standards

Primary and secondary biosafety laboratory protection standards Shanghai Sujing

Animal facilities - Level 1 biosafety level

Animal facilities with a level 1 biosafety level are suitable for the maintenance of most quarantined reserve laboratory animals (except for primates, which should be consulted with national authorities) and animals specially vaccinated with dangerous grade 1 microorganisms. The application of microbiological operational specifications (GMT) is required. The director of the animal facility must develop policies, procedures and protocols for animal operations and entry into the breeding facility, develop appropriate medical monitoring programmes for staff, and develop and implement safety or operational manuals.

Animal facilities - Level 2 biosafety level

Animal facilities with secondary biosafety levels are suitable for animals that are specifically vaccinated with a hazard class 2 microorganism and require the following safety protections:

1. All requirements of animal facilities at the first level of biosafety must be met.

2. Post biohazard warning signs at doors and other suitable locations.

3. The design of the facility must be easy to clean and manage.

4. The door must be opened inward and can be closed automatically.

5. Have proper temperature, ventilation and lighting.

6. If mechanical ventilation is used, the direction of the airflow must be inward. The exhausted air should be discharged outdoors and should not be recycled inside the building.

7. Authorized personnel can enter.

8. Only experimental animals are accepted.

9. Control plans for arthropods and rodents should be developed.

10. If there is a window, it must be safe and resistant to crushing. If the window can be opened, an anti-arthropod gauze must be installed.

11. After use, the working surface should be disinfected with an effective disinfectant.

12. Work that may generate aerosols must use a biosafety cabinet (Class I or II) or an isolation box with dedicated air supply and HEPA filtered exhaust.

13. An autoclave is available on or near the animal facility.

14. The cleaning of animal litter must minimize the generation of aerosols and dust.

15. All waste and litter must be removed before disposal.

16. Limit the use of sharp instruments as much as possible. Sharps should always be collected in a puncture-proof container with a lid and treated as an infectious substance.

17. Items subject to autoclaving and incineration should be safely transported in a closed container.

18. Animal cages must be cleaned up after use.

19. Animal carcasses must be incinerated.

20. Protective clothing and other equipment must be worn in the facility and taken off when leaving.

21. There must be hand washing facilities. Persons must wash their hands before leaving the animal facility.

22. In the event of injury, regardless of the severity, appropriate treatment must be performed and reported and recorded.

23. It is forbidden to eat, drink, smoke and make up in the facility.

24. All personnel must receive appropriate training.
